Full-Spectrum Birth Doula Care

trauma-informed birth & labor support
in Philly and virtually

The threshold of birth is one of the most profound, raw, and life-altering transitions of our lives.

Birth doula support means you have steady, trauma-informed presence through the full arc: birth planning, labor care & advocacy, and early postpartum integration, with nervous system grounding and somatic support for the emotional waves, identity changes, and relational complexity along the way.

You deserve care that honors who you were before this threshold, who you are in the transition of labor, and who you will be on the other side.

I support birthing people and families who don’t cleanly fit into traditional, cookie-cutter spaces.

I’m here for the cycle-breakers, edge-walkers, creatives, and anyone navigating a complex or unique path through pregnancy without a mainstream script to follow. LGBTQIA+ families, non-traditional, kinky, or poly parents, trauma survivors, and those stepping into birth and parenthood without a standard template.

You don’t have to leave your identity, lifestyle, or full self at the door.

Whether you’re caught in a mental loop trying to research your way into feeling safe, feel anxious about birth or overwhelmed by the whole process, dread the thought having to advocate for your birth plan while in active labor, or want to ensure your partner feels like a grounded, empowered co-pilot rather than a helpless bystander

I hold space for your complexity, advocate for your agency, and keep your nervous system anchored, so you can cross this threshold connected and secure.

serving Philadelphia, South Jersey, Main Line, Delco, Chester County, Bucks County, and surrounding area

Birth support that honors all of you

You don’t have to turn down your volume, edit your identity, translate your lifestyle, or ease me into the structure of your relationships.

My care honors your full, unfiltered world: no social masking, performance, or justification required. I step into your birth room and prenatal world with grounded advocacy that respects the unique design of your life, and support that holds the intensity of birth.

You deserve a steady anchor who helps prepare your mind, body, and space, protects your autonomy, and grounds your nervous system so you can cross into parenthood feeling confident, connected, and supported through every shift.

What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a care professional who provides holistic physical, emotional, practical, and advocacy support throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and early postpartum recovery. While medical providers focus on the clinical aspects of birth, a doula’s primary focus is tending to you and your needs throughout pregnancy and labor, including birth planning, continuous labor support (positioning, breathwork, comfort measures), and real-time advocacy.

In my practice, this care is integrated with nervous system grounding, somatic support tools, and relational support so you and your partner can navigate birth with clarity, confidence, and connection.

In-Person & Virtual Birth Support

Birth preparation goes far beyond a clinical checklist or birth plan. It’s a total transformation of your body, mind, emotions, routines, and identity. I support every shift along the way, helping you untangle anxiety, process fears, navigate relationships, and build practical tools for this next phase of life.

We prepare not just for birth, but for the person you’re becoming on the other side.

I offer virtual support anywhere in the world, in-person labor support in the Philadelphia area, and can travel throughout the USA and beyond by request.

Lorrae Jo, certified doula and trauma-informed somatic coach in Philadelphia

about me + my path to motherhood

I’m Lorrae (she/her), a certified full-spectrum doula and trauma-informed somatic and relationship coach, with over a decade of experience supporting people through identity shifts, relational healing, and life’s hardest transitions.

My path to motherhood was non-traditional, and the identity shift was still all-encompassing. My sense of self rearranged around love, responsibility, and the weight of showing up for a little human every day, which came with grief for the parts of myself that felt lost to an all-consuming role.

The role change is instant and overwhelming, even when you absolutely love it, and especially when your postpartum hormones are making it harder than expected. It’s disorienting to know exactly who you are, and struggle to integrate that self with the massive demands of your new reality.

When your world has shifted overnight, it’s completely normal for grief, exhaustion, numbness, and love to be present all at once.

my doula care + purpose

For the past decade, I’ve supported people navigating sexual trauma, intimacy shifts, and relational healing – all at the intersection of body, identity, and connection.

I felt called to start full-spectrum doula work to fill the gaps – where providers forget who we are beyond “mom” – and offer care for that transition in a way that honors all of who you are, even and especially when it’s messy.

My background in somatic and trauma-informed care shapes how I hold space for families I work with, with tools to regulate your nervous system, reconnect with your body, and honor your emotions while navigating pregnancy, birth, and parenthood.

Our families, relationships, and identities were already complex before a baby arrived, and you deserve care from someone who can hold all of it without flinching.

    what clients are saying

Lorrae held space for every part of my process, grief, relief, confusion. There was never pressure to explain anything, she just got it without me having to put everything into words. It was really grounding, and helped me feel like I wasn’t doing it all alone. I came in feeling so raw and unsure, but she reminded me that I didn’t have to be strong all the time, it was okay to be sad and feel everything all at once, and okay to need support. It helped me stop spiraling and actually process my emotions. I didn’t realize how much I needed that kind of care until I had it.

    ANIKA

I felt really nervous and overwhelmed going into it, and Lorrae helped me feel more prepared and less alone. She checked in without hovering, and I knew I could reach out at any point. Getting my questions answered and having someone to call or text when I was worried was so helpful to ease my anxieties. I wasn’t sure what kind of support I needed, but Lorrae made space for everything I was feeling. I felt safe being completely honest, and it felt so comfortable to have her there. That’s rare, and I really appreciated it.

    JORDAN

Lorrae was incredible at walking me through the everything step-by-step. She explained all my options, helped me figure out what made the most sense for me and offered tools to stay calm and grounded throughout it. I like to have all the information, and having all that knowledge was exactly what I needed to feel really secure in my choice. She also helped me prep in advance to make it more comfortable and manageable. It was both emotional and practical support, and made me feel way more secure going into that day.

    FAQ | frequently asked questions

How do I know if a doula is right for me?

If you are feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or just need some extra help from someone who gets it, this support is for you. My clients usually choose to work with me becasue they want someone in their corner who can handle the physical, emotional, and relational complexities of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum without flinching. Whether you have a massive support system or none at all, having dedicated care ensures you don’t have to ignore your own body and identity while showing up for your baby.

Postpartum doula vs. night nurse: What's the difference?

A night nurse focuses almost exclusively on the infant – feeding, changing, and putting the baby back to sleep so you can rest.

As a postpartum doula, my focus is the recovery and transition of the whole family system. While I also provide full newborn care so you can rest, I’m there to support your somatic recovery, mental health, relationship shifts, and the identity transition happening underneath it all.

What happens during a postpartum doula visit: daytime vs. overnight?

Every daytime visit starts with a check-in, we map out what your nervous system and household need that day. A visit might involve troubleshooting a feeding method, holding the baby while you take a long shower, prepping a nourishing meal, or doing nervous system regulation work to ease anxiety and overwhelm. There’s no standard checklist, and every visit shapes itself around you.

An overnight shift is designed for pure rest: I take over baby care entirely through the night so you can have deep sleep, only waking you if you are chest/breastfeeding, and handling everything else so you can wake up feeling more rested. I offer 10 hour overnights (instead of the usual 8) so you can comfortably shift gears, get a full sleep, and start your morning without feeling rushed.

Do you offer virtual postpartum support? Are you a Philadelphia doula? or Florida doula?

Yes to all of the above. Virtual support is available anywhere in the world. In-person care is available throughout Philadelphia and surrounding areas — South Jersey, Main Line, Delco, Chester County, Bucks County, and beyond. I frequently travel to Florida and can easily arrange care there. Travel throughout the US is available by request.

Greater Philadelphia Area Doula Support servicing:

    • Philly Neighborhoods: Center City, South Philly, Tacony, NE Philly, Germantown, Mt. Airy, Roxborough, Manayunk
    • Philly Suburbs: Delco, Main Line, Chester County, Bucks County, Montgomery County, Conshohocken, Media, Swarthmore, Upper Darby, Springfield, Chester
    • NJ/South Jersey: Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Haddonfield, Collingswood, Marlton, Medford, Moorestown, Mt. Laurel, Palmyra, Pennsauken, Maple Shade, Berlin, Mt. Holly
    • PA Surrounding Areas: Yardley, New Hope, Newtown, Doylestown, Warrington, Lansdale, West Chester, Downingtown, Exton, King of Prussia, Paoli, Blue Bell, Ambler
    • I am happy to travel to you outside these areas, and frequently travel to NYC, Central Florida, and down the east coast. Reach out and we can set it up.

When should you hire a postpartum doula? Are you available before the baby arrives?

Building a relationship before your world shifts can bring a lot of grounding to the third trimester and help you prepare emotionally, somatically, and practically for the postpartum period. We can use prenatal sessions to build a support plan, talk through fears, look ahead at relational dynamics, map out your postpartum boundaries, and prepare your nervous system and home for the transition before you are in the thick of it. Starting before the baby arrives means you’re not figuring out what you need once you’re already depleted.

How long after birth can you work with a postpartum doula?

There’s no cutoff on postpartum care. Adjustments of parenthood unfold over a much longer timeline than our culture acknowledges. Whether you are in the immediate, hazy days of week one, several months into your journey, or over a year into parenting and realize you need space to process the transition, you are welcome here.

Do you provide LGBTQIA+ affirming, gender-affirming, and queer postpartum care? Do you work with non-traditional families?

Yes. Queer- and gender-affirming, poly- and kink-knowledgable, body-liberated, and inclusive care for all relationship structures, identities, and family shapes is the foundation of my practice, not an afterthought. I support LGBTQIA+ families, solo parents, polyamorous and non-traditional relationship structures, lifestyle kinksters, sex workers, and anyone whose life doesn’t map onto the mainstream postpartum narrative. You never have to translate your life, identity, or your family structure to me. I’m already here for it and support you.

What is trauma-informed postpartum care? Do you work with birth trauma?

Yes. Trauma-informed postpartum care is a core pillar of my practice. If you are navigating the aftermath of a difficult or traumatic birth, dismissive provider, unexpected procedure, frightening complication, or a postpartum experience that feels disconnected or disorienting in your body, my background in somatic work allows me to hold space for that safely. We work at a pace that respects your nervous system and prioritizes emotional safety and body connection, without rushing you to “heal” or gloss over what happened.

How can a doula support postpartum anxiety, depression, or overwhelm?

Postpartum mood changes, overwhelm, numbness, and anxiety live right at the intersection of emotional care and identity. My care is entirely trauma-informed. I bring somatic and nervous system regulation tools to help you find steadiness through hard moments, and I maintain a curated network of clinical mental health providers if your care requires additional medical or therapeutic support.

Can a postpartum doula help with formula feeding, pumping, and chestfeeding?

Absolutely. Whether you are breastfeeding, chestfeeding, pumping, formula feeding, or combination feeding, your choices are supported without a shred of hierarchy or judgment. I can assist with latching comfort, positioning, bottle feeding logistics, pumping setup, and troubleshooting the emotional and physical hurdles that come with feeding a newborn.

Do you offer bereavement doula support for pregnancy or infant loss?

Yes. My care extends to all outcomes of pregnancy, including miscarriage, stillbirth, TFMR, and infant loss all fall within my scope. Grief and love can sit right next to each other in the body, and navigating the empty space after a loss requires deep, unflinching emotional and somatic support. You deserve care that doesn’t rush you, minimize what happened, feel like toxic positivity, or make you perform okay-ness on anyone else’s timeline. You don’t have to carry that isolation or heavy physical transition by yourself. Reach out directly so we can talk through what support looks like for where you are.

Does postpartum doula care include partners and relationships?

Yes, and they are highly encouraged to be involved. The role changes of parenting affect the whole household. My background is rooted in relational healing and intimacy coaching, so supporting communication dynamics and helping partners navigate their own thresholds alongside you is a natural part of how I work.

How do I add a postpartum doula to my baby registry?

Postpartum care can be added directly to your registry through cash-funded platforms like BeHerVillage, Babylist, or similar registries. It’s an amazing way to let your community fund practical and structural support for your recovery, instead of or alongside traditional baby gear. See the full list of registries here.

How much does a postpartum doula cost in Philadelphia and New Jersey?

My Postpartum Support Blueprint (intro package) is $950 and includes a free consultation, a 60-minute Integration Session, a 2-hour Deep Dive Support Session, and 8 hours of hands-on care. Daytime support packages range from $900–$2,700. Overnight packages range from $650 (single night) to $6,000 (12-night package). Select sessions are offered on a sliding scale — visit the pricing page for full details.

Can I extend my postpartum doula hours or care packages after booking?

Always. Your needs will shift as postpartum unfolds, and your support can shift with them. Additional sessions, hours, and overnight visits can be added at any point. We’ll figure out what makes sense as we go.

What are your qualifications and training credentials?

I’m a Certified Postpartum Doula through Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings (BADT) and a Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator in training through Birthing From Within. I hold a BA in Psychology and Gender Studies, have 10+ years of experience as a trauma-informed sex educator and intimacy coach, and am completing Somatic Experiencing Practitioner training through SE International.

I’m also a Certified Abortion Doula through the Colorado Doula Project, CPR/AED/First Aid certified through the Red Cross, and have 15 more pregnancy, reproductive health, and family planning certifications and trainings through Reproductive Health National Trailing Center (RHNTC).

How do I book a consultation?

Fill out the contact form on this page or reach out directly to schedule your free 30-minute consultation. We’ll talk through what you’re navigating, what kind of support feels right, and build a sustainable care plan from there.
